Yirgacheffe, in southern Ethiopia's Sidamo region, is one of the most
celebrated coffee-growing areas in the world and is often
recognized as one of coffee's original birthplaces. Known for its
vibrant, washed coffees, Yirgacheffe has such a strong reputation
that it is considered a micro-region in its own right within specialty
coffee. Coffees from this region are loved for their bright acidity,
floral aromatics, and citrusy complexity. Most of the coffee is grown
by smallholder farmers who intercrop with food crops-a sustainable
method that supports both land and livelihood. Zooming out to the
national level, coffee plays a vital role in Ethiopia's economy,
generating between 25% and 35% of total export earnings. More
than 15 million Ethiopians-about a quarter of the population-rely
on coffee for their income, making it not just an export, but
foundation of life and culture across the country.
